1a D2 with 10 elements; lateral scale rows 28; scales of body with narrow
blackish margins; 5-6 diffuse blackish bars on side, and large diffuse
blackish spot at base of caudal fin; a large, prominent black spot on
upper half of pectoral fin base ....................................................................lucretiae
1b D2 with 11-12 elements; lateral scale rows 30-34;..................................................2

2a Maxilla extending to middle or posterior of eye; predorsal area with scales ........3
2b Maxilla extending well past eye to near preopercle; anal with 11-12 elements;
scales in lateral series 32; predorsal area without scales; caudal lanceolate;
middle of side with 4-5 brown blotches and black, crescent-shaped spot
at base of caudal fin; .................................................................................... maxillaris
3a Scales in lateral series 34; maxilla extending to middle of eye; D1 not reaching
origin of D2 when depressed; body with 4, diffuse, rather wide cross bands; a
black spot on base of pectoral near its upper margin .................................... fusca
