IDENTIFICATION

Head Pores - Cephalic canals paired between the eyes from pore D anteriorly; Pores present A',B,C(2), D,F,H'; preopercle with pores __________

Scales - Scales in lateral series 58(49-66) ctenoid posteriorly, reduced ctenoid anteriorly; predorsal scales 0-35, scales reaching to mid-preopercle or preopercle;

Fins - D1 - VI, none filamentous; D2 - 13(12-15); pectoral - 17(15-18); anal - 14(13-15); pelvic fin disk like and short

Head - maxilla reaching to under 1/3 to 1/2 anterior of eye; tongue emarginate to bilobed; upper jaw with several rows of teeth, outer row of enlarged teeth extending along entire jaw but not greatly enlarged, lower jaw with several rows of teeth, a few recurved strong canines either side of dentary symphosis in innermost row;

Papillae -

Color - Upper jaw with dark spot midlaterally on each side. Horizontal bar on cheek below median longitudinal row of papillae, extending from above corner of the jaw to preopercle. Patch behind eye following posteriormost suborbital papillae row, then turning caudal to comtinue preopercle canal; sometimes discontinuous and forming blotches. Opercle dusky. Shoulder patch present. Five midlateral blotches present with last 2-3 on the trunk frequently having posterodorsal thin arms and last 2 often with anteroventral arms also. Small spots scattered variably across sides. (Pezold 84)

Distribution - East Pacific; California to Gulf of Cal. To Ecuador.

Habitat - shallow muddy areas in esturine streams and mangrove swamps
