IDENTIFICATION

Head Pores - cephalic canal system with pores B',D,F,H'; pore D sometimes obscured with mucus

Scales - Scales in lateral series 60-70, all cycloid; no scales on predorsal region, cheek, or operculum; no modified basicaudal scales

Fins - D1 - V-VI, no spine elongate; D2 - 10-11; pectoral - 20-23, first ray 1/2 to 1/4 free from membrane; anal - 8-9; caudal segmented rays - 17, fin truncate;

Head - Maxilla extending to preopercle in adults; tongue emarginate or rounded; membranous flap between teeth and lip of upper jaw, flap on lower jaw smaller; head sharply rounded in profile;

Papillae - Large papillae with few longitudinal rows

Color - In life: Basic colors brown with some yellow from melanophores and xanthophores, relative intensity dependent on amount of light and color of background. (Barlow 1961)

Distribution - Northern Gulf of California

Habitat - Lives in the highest intertidal regions of rocky shores in small pools or in tidal streams which course through cobble and sand
