IDENTIFICATION

Head Pores - Cephalic lateral line system with pores B',C(S),D(S),E,F,G,H' and K',L'. Preopercle canal with pores M',N,O'

Scales - Scales in lateral series with 40-45(37-45). Nape scaled, cheek naked.

Fins - D1 - VI; D2 - I+14(13-15); anal - I+13(12-14); pectoral 19-21(18-22); pectoral free rays moderately developed..

Head - Anterior nostril with thin tentacle; maxilla reaching to anterior or slightly beyond pupil.

Papillae - A transverse pattern with four rows anterior to row b, transverse rows not extending entire distance from orbit to row d; row d in two sections; two seperate rows below row b (5i and 6i); row 6i not extending dorsally to meet row b and ending at the level of row d; row z extending ventrally to pore M.

Color - pale gray to fawn; four brownish lateral midline blotches below second dorsal fin; cheek and opercle with white spots.

Distribution - Eastern Atlantic; known from the English channel, Maderia, and the Canary Islands.

Habitat - An offshore species known from 35-100 meters on muddy sand and coarse substrate.
