IDENTIFICATION - Distinguished by the dark spot on the lower pectoral fin base and spotting on the body.

Size - to 42.2 mm SL

Head Pores - Cephalic head canal with pores B',C(s),D, E, F, G(on side branch), H' and K',L'; preopercle canal with M',N,O'

Scales - Ctenoid scales on body, cycloid on pectoral fin base and chest, 22-23 in lateral series

Fins - D1 - VI, no spine elongate; D2 - 11; pectoral 18-20; anal - 10; segmented caudal - 17, branched 12-13;

Head - Teeth in lower jaw - outer row of moderate and uniformly sized canines followed by 2-3 rows of much smaller canines, followed by an inner row of canines slightly smaller than outer row; upper jaw with similar teeth;

Papillae -

Color - Pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins clear; dorsal fin with a buff band distally which is darker on anterior portion of fin; below this band is a thin immaculate band followed by an irregular light coral pink band on the dorsal base. This latter band interupped with light areas. Caudal fin spotted dorsally and ventrally with coral pink. Two coral pink spots on base of caudal seperated by a white area. A well-developed brown spot ventrally in the preopectoral area. This spot composed of a group of closely arranged melanophores. Ventral areas of body white. Ground color of sides white. A row of dusky light buff spots on dorsal contour followed ventrally by ground color, then a row of coral pink spots seperated by white and buff, then another row of coral pink spots larger than the previous rpw followed by the ground color. Predorsal region with three longitudinal light orange lines. A pale orange line behind eye running slightly dorsally, another of same color extending from beneath eye across opercle and over dorsal pectoral base. These last two lines margined with black. A U-shaped pale orange line with the base directed anteriorl on snout. (Springer 1960)

Distribution - Both coasts of s. Fla. (Peterson FG); Bahamas, Caribbean, Bonaire (Humann); Los Roques, Venezula (Ramierez & Cervigon 2003); off South Carolina

Habitat - 18-37 meters
