IDENTIFICATION

Head Pores - Cehpalic head canals with pores B',C(s),D,E,F,H' and preopercle pores M',N'

Scales - 3-9 in males; 6-11 in females along peduncle; no basicaudal scales

Fins - D1 - VII (rarely 6 or 8), no filaments elongate; D2 - 11(10-12); caudal rounded with 17 branched rays; pectoral 16(15-18); anal 9(8-11); pelvic I,5 all rays branched, disk complete with well developed frenum, fin reaching 1/2 to 3/4 distance to anus

Head - rostral frenum absent; no barbels; maxilla reaching to beyond posterior margin of eye in large males;

Papillae - A transverse pattern with 3 vertical rows in front of row b

Color - Preserved material: Color of male tan, body and head almost completely covered with close-set light-brown pigment spots;a more or less pigment-free area about the anus and on the ventral midline between the anus and tip of the pelvic disk. Dorsal surface of head darker than body, more or less marbled with dark-brown lines; suborbital with one or two dark-brown streaks radiating from eye;small dark-brown spots above the upper angles of the oercle and preopercle; margin of opercular membrane pale. Indications of five vertical, dorsolateral bars on body, dorsal terminus of each bar reflected in darkening of back or bases of included fin rays. The anterior bar includes the bases of the second to fifth dorsal-fin spines; second bar about half the width of the first and located slightly in front of the second dorsal fin; third bar includes to the fourth to seventh dorsal-fin rays; fourth bar, about 25% narrower than the third,crosses the peduncle immediately behind the last dorsal-fin ray; the final bar narrow, indistinct, located on the caudal-fin base. Pectoral-fin axil pale; body with a few scattered large brown pigment spots, somewhat more abundant under the pectoral fin and on the midline posteriad. Basal two-thirds of the first dorsal fin brownish; outer third lighter, but with a narrow, distinct, dark-brown to black marginal band and pale distal edging. Second dorsal fin with similar but less-apparent emargination and with indications of about four diagonal browinish bands below; caudal fin with traces of about four brownish bands, a pale margin, and a narrow, indistinct, dusky submarginal band. Anal fin pale distally, with a rather broad dark-brown submarginal band, elsewhere speckled with tan; pectoral fin base with two large brown pigment spots near bases of fifth and sixth rays, and one or two others near base of lowermost rays; pectoral fin brownish proximad, becomming progressively lighter toward margin; p[elvic disk brownish with a pale marginal band.
